The actual name is Gura Humorului.
Gura means mouth. Humorului is "of the
river Humor".
Here the Humor river joins the Moldova river.
Only possible course.
"Humorului" was too awkward for the Austrian
tongues.
So it became Humora.

Dear Christian,
Let me add my nickel of info from my trip to our Scharfstein reunion in Gura Humora last September.
Accommodation- you can perhaps find cheaper Pension in the city, but Hilde's very cheap compare to western Europe, very lovely. Food is excellent!
The owner, Lucy, who's ancestors were of German origin (Schwab's) was very supportive with her knowledge of the city history and people, and very helpful with all the arrangements we needed.

The Jewish quarter was in very intensive renovations on September, the street and pavements were re-paved, and all houses (at least the facades) were renovated two.
The synagogue's facade was renovated, and they had plans to begin the internal works soon.
The Juddengasse begins near the city center in Olga Kobylianska Garden. If the name is familiar- Herrengasse in Cz is now called after the Gura Humora native Olga Kobylianska.

The Jewish cemetery is in fair shape. It is divided to the old section on the southern side, and the new section in the north side.
A Romanian family lives in a house between the two sections. They take some care on the cemetery, and the old lady speaks some German. (I hope she is OK, as she was not in good health last fall).
The new part has a map + graves index.
Beside my Garand Grandfather grave, you can find the grave of Sara Schmidt, the mother of Josef Schmidt, the famous Tenor from Czernowitz.
The cemetery (new) index:

other "must" attractions in southern Bukovina are the painted monasteries.
The most commercial one is the Voronet Monastery, about 5km from GH.
My personal impression is that the Moldoviţa Monastery is the prettiest.
A unique architecture to southern Bukovina is the beautiful decorations on the Gutters and Eaves of the houses, even on the poorest houses.
It looks like an Aluminum Embroidery on the Eaves and on the gutters.
Enjoy and inform us, we are following your reports!
