I am new to this list - very new - as I only discovered it yesterday.
In my maternal grandfather's naturalization application application in
the United Kingdom, he stated that he was born (September, 1873) in
Chotin Kishinev. Since one of his brothers (Yossel) said in his passage
to England document that he too was born in Khotin (1880), I surmised
that Grandpa had added "Kishinev" to his answer because that was the
nearest big town. Their parents were Iosif Moische and Fradl Uzner.
Grandpa Henry Osner (the name he was known by in England) - Henoch in
his homeland - met my grandma (Ester, nee Borziansky) in
Kamenetz-Podolskiy where she was born in 1878. Her father (Chaim
Fishel) was a professional soldier in the Russian army and had, so I was
told, many medals. They married in Vinnitsa in August, 1897.
In May, 1900, on the Ophelia, they arrived in London, England, called
Enoch and Ester Hausner and stated that they came from Samligora and
that they were Austrian. Samligora is nowhere to be found and it was
suggested to me that it was probably Sadagora.
Yossel - mentioned above - married Sarah Doodovitch whose younger
brother was Isaac/Issey Doodovitch (born about 1897). He served in the
British Army in the 13th London Regiment from 1917 to 1920. In both his
army papers and his naturalization application, he said that his
birthplace was Cornovitchi.
So - what I would really like to know is - are all these places
sufficiently near to each other that my ancestors did actually come from
all of them? Khotin, Kishinev, Kamenetz-Podolskiy, Vinnitsa, Sadagora,
Cornovitchi (which I assume is Czernowitz)? I've found my great-uncle
Yossel/Joseph's name in a Bessarabia database. I really am quite confused.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very happy to hear them.
Thanks. Myra Waddell (born in London, now living in South Australia).
