Dear members,

My name is Ian Beitel and I am writing from my home in Montreal.
My Beitel family started their journey to North America in approx. 1917-18 when my uncle Samuel Beutel left Europe
and made his way to New York where his name took an Ellis Island change from Beutel to Beitel.
In 1920 two more brothers arrived in New York, Bernard and Joseph and they too adopted the new name of Beitel.
The next to come in 1928 was my father Chaim but through Halifax to Montreal due to the new restrictive immigration policy
of the USA which came into effect I believe in 1924. His path would have taken him south to join his brothers but love stepped
in and so I am Canadian. More family arrived in Montreal in 1930, my grandfather Usher, his second wife, a lady who we all referred to as The Tante, her son Sydney (Ziggy) and my aunt Esther (Erna). Esther migrated south to her brothers and married Max Poppel who came from Sadagora. They had a daughter Marlene my first cousin and good friend. The eldest sibling Faiga made it to Montreal in 1936 with her family, her husband Herman Stein and daughter Rose. The only person left behind was Usher’s wife Malka (Scharfstein) who I believe is buried in Bian (Bojan).

The family originated in Uscie Biskupje a shtetl due north of Czernowitz on the north bank of the Dniester River. They made their way to Bian,
where Usher’s father Israel was associated with the first Boyaner Rebbe. We believe he was the gabbai in the Rebbe’s Shul. The only written information that I have is an address in Czernowitz. It is No. 8Anast Crimea St.

All to say that Marlene and I will be travelling to Czernowitz in June and we would like to be as well prepared as possible.
I would like to ask the group some questions and seek some advice. Many thanks for any help that can be offered.

Firstly, is anyone familiar with this family?
What should we do before we leave for Czernowitz?
Is there a map which would show Crimea St?
Is there a cemetery in Bian?
Can you recommend a translator?
How about a hotel.
What Jewish organizations can I contact in Czernowitz?
Where would we go to find official records?
Is it advisable to rent a car?

I thank you all in advance. I look forward to this journey to the past as well future encounters within this group.

Ian Beitel
