Czernowitzers, dear friends...
Yoav Mentesh, a fellow member of the Nadworna Shtetl Research Group wrote recently: "I am looking for accurate data on the number of Jewish residents in Galicia starting from the end of 17th century. I read somewhere that in the 17th century there were only 900,000 jews in all over the world. 70% of them lived in Europe (including the Balkans and western Europe). If someone seen a website or a book with this statistical information please contact me and share it with all the others."
Consequently I updated my previous posting on the BUKOVINA CENSUSES for the Years 1869, 1880, 1890, 1900
http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2010/09/bukovina-census-for-years-1869-1880.html
by adding the GALICIA CENSUSES for the same period of time as well as a list of abbreviations and their translation. Well, in order to avoid misunderstandings, please note, that
- particular family names are NOT INCLUDED, just localities, facts and figures,
- you'll have to face large downloads, since some of the volumes exceed hundreds of pages,
- although we have translated the abbreviations, the censuses themselves are in German.
Since most of our ancestors came initially from Galicia to Bukovina, so as f. i. mine from Rohatyn, these data may be interesting for our Czernowitz-L Discussion Group (
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/) too.
Enjoy the data and Chag sameach!
