At the south of Czernowirz was a place called "Die Maut" - the toll, where
there seems to have been times when you had to pay
"strassenbenuetzungsgebuehr" (talking about the length of German words) -
road usage payment.

Vama in rumanian means customs - Zoll in German.
Meaning it was a border crossing - question between
what countries?
Since 1779 there was Habsburg everywhere,
Before that Bukovina was a Turkish vasal.
So they paid customs at the crossings,
If not , you went by night through the woods.
Here were the wolves and the bears and the robbers.

Dear all,
Today my friends and I traveled further west, deeper into the Carpathians.
The Monastery of Voroneţ and the Jewish heritage of Vama and Câmpulung
Moldovenesc were on our way. Again and we looked for the remaining traces of
Jewish Bukovina, for cemeteries and synagogues.

Warm wishes from cold Vatra Dornei, which we will explore tomorrow,
Christian
