Czernowitzers...
When it came to the designation of the Dutch Consul in Czernowitz in 1928, a snippet out of a letter of the Dutch Ambassador in Bucharest to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, dated November 17, 1927 reads as follows:
"Czernowitz remained what it was under Austrian rule: An almost entirely Jewish town, but one with „good Jews“ according to the local authorities. Out of six „potential candidates“ only Mr. Ballo, the Director of Banca Romaneasca and Mr. Fischer - who of course is practically ineligible for this position - are Christians. In my opinion there is no reason at all, why in such a Jewish milieu a Jew should not been entrusted - similar to Galatz - with the Dutch interests."
Well, Edmund Luttinger became in 1928 Dutch Consul in Czernowitz and remained in office even after WW2. As you see, our ancestors were even according to the Romanian authorities "good Jews"!
