Hi, Oren,
You love aviation, I guess.
This was obviously an international event.

Who was poor Mr. Waka Masakatsu?
Here is some info:
In 1938, following a plane crash Lieutenant Colonel Waka Masakatsu, the
military attaché of the Japanese Embassy in Romania died. He was cremated at
the Cenusa crematorium. The urn with his ashes was sent to Japan.

You can see above a picture of his cremation ceremony at Cenusa Crematorium
in Bucharest.

Was he visiting Czernowitz , too ? Why?
Regards,
Irene

The 1938 was discussed in our list about two years ago.
Following is what iosif vaisman wrote on March 4 2013:

Despite all the past and present problems, the airport has a very good
safety record. There were no accidents with fatalities in the Chernovtsy
airport, and two accidents (both bad) involving flights originated in
Chernovtsy (in 1938 and 1976):

I added that trivial info:

Interesting, in the link they give background of the flight captain (Google
translate):

"Twin-engine Lockheed L-14 H Super Electra (LOT recently bought six machines
of this type) is piloting Kotarba Wladyslaw, who in Polish Airlines has been
working since the beginning of their existence.
For a long time he flew on the most difficult of LOT and grand line - to
Palestine."
