Many of you, who are also members of CJCRO, will get this Email in
duplicate,
because I of course sent it to the CJCRO membership as well.
Excuse the duplication.

While we were in Czernowitz, Sasha Wolloch and I wanted to asses
the current situation at the cemetery and to find workers who would
continue
clearing the cemetery of invasive trees, bushes and climbing plants.
We also wanted to seek help from the city authorities in our efforts
to restore and maintain the cemetery.

Most of the time we were in Czernowitz it was raining and very cold,
And because of this, we were not able to examine every part of the
cemetery,
but in general I can say that most, but not all the paths in the
cemetery
are much clearer than I have seen them before.

The areas of the cemetery adjacent to the fence, on Zelena str.,
which were cleared and treated with herbicides by the volunteers
from ASF are completely cleared and so are some other small areas.
Many areas which were cleared before but not treated properly
with herbicides, are now very overgrown.
A few areas of the cemetery have as yet not been cleared at all.

With the assistance of Rabbi Glisenshtain and Mr. Yakov Schwartzman
(a member of the local Jewish community) we were able
to a make arrangements for the continuation of the work at the cemetery;
including both the cutting AND the treating with herbicides
of the various perennial invasive and weedy plants at the cemetery.
The workers will initially clear one hectare, which is in pretty bad
condition. Mr. Schwartzman will make sure the work is done properly
And if satisfied, the workers will continue their work.

Simultaneously we also made arrangements with the head of
the Botany department at the university and with the manager
of the local Botanical Garden to have a few students experiment
on some of the most invasive trees and bushes in the cemetery,
with various herbicides and methods of application, in order to
establish
the most efficient and effective method of eradicating the invasive
plants at the cemetery.

In addition I was able to meet the new mayor and get his promise
that the cemetery authorities will make a greater effort to maintain
the cemetery, cut down some of the very large trees and assist
the volunteers both from ASF and from SVIT Ukraine, by having
one or two of the cemetery employees work with the volunteers
and cut the larger saplings and branches with a chain saw.
I also asked that tags giving the number of each area be posted
in the cemetery. This was previously promised.

While there I took some photographs at the cemetery. I have uploaded
these photographs to a Picasa Web album, which you can access at:

https://picasaweb.google.com/MReiferTaylor/ChernivtsiJewishCemeteryApril2015?authkey=Gv1sRgCMWlp9amqcWZFQ

Later this summer I will also include the photographs contained in this
album in the album of gravestones in the cemetery on which the
inscriptions
are easily legible.

Best regards,

Mimi
