When I am in Czernowitz I try to relive and remember my childhood.
At that time I only knew the names of the streets in German.
Currently I know the names of some of the streets in Ukrainian
and when I speak to the local people, I use those names,
but they are not familiar to me, nor did I think that they would evoke
much of a response from the members of our list.
I did make a mistake about the "Goldene Loewe" and many of the
University buildings,
about this I apologize, not being certain of the names, I should not
have mentioned them.
I do not object at all to Benjamin correcting me.
As a child I was only familiar with the Math building, the first
university building
and the building in which my father had studied. He had pointed it
out to me
shortly before we left Czernowitz and the first time I returned for a
visit,
56 years later, I recognized it immediately, even though I did not
even know
where in Czernowitz our taxi was driving.
When I wrote "strada General Prezan" and not Schulgasse,
it is because I have in my possession a piece of paper on which is
written:
"bolnav" sick in Romanian and also on the same piece of paper is
written:
Strada Prezan #15. (the address of the apartment in which we lived in
the ghetto).
About the current economic situation and mood in Chernivtsi, my opinions
are based on the places I saw and the people I met, who mostly
belong to the middle class or the upper class. I also stayed in the
center of Czernowitz
and did not venture into the housing estates built during the Soviet
period.
Some buildings in Czernowitz itself are in dreadful condition.
Not near the theatre, not on the Ringplatz or the Herrengasse,
but in what used to be Schmiedgasse and is now "Celana".
The house in which we lived during the war and the adjacent "Caserna"
are in dreadful condition, as is part of my family's property.
Still; Old Czernowitzers, their descendants as well as anyone wanting
a short, interesting, inexpensive and pleasant vacation, should visit
Czernowitz.
