The poem was meant by Schiller as a mockery of courtly love as defined by
google:
a highly conventionalized medieval tradition of love between a knight and a
married noblewoman, first developed by the troubadours of Southern France
and extensively employed in European literature of the time. The love of the
knight for his lady was regarded as an ennobling passion and the
relationship was typically unconsummated.
The fiddle and harp were the most respectable, played by the troubadours and
associated with courtly love
Some time ago when teaching two of my grandchildren German I read the poem
with them accompanied with a translation I made into Hebrew. They were not
very impressed by the action or its conclusion and did not report dreams
about lions tigers or panthers.I don't know how the Hebrew comes through on
this site, but here it is:
Der
פרידריך פון שילר
לפני גן האריות שלו,
כדי לצפות במשחק הלחימה
ישב המלך פרנסיס,
וסביבו גדולי הכתר,
ומסביב במרפסת גבוהה
הגברות כזר יפה.
וכשהוא מנופף באצבע,
נפתח הכלוב הרחב,
ופנימה עם צעד שקול
נכנס אריה
אילם ומסתכל
סביבו,
בפיהוק ממושך,
ומנער רעמו
ומותח את האיברים
ונשכב.
והמלך הניף שנית,
ואז נפתח בזריזות
שער שני
ממנו רץ
עם קפיצה פרועה
יוצא נמר.
כירא את האריה,
הוא שואג בקול רם,
דופק עם הזנב
מעגל נוראי
מותח הלשון,
וביישן במעגל
הוא עוקף את האריה
מגרגר בזעם;
ובנחמה נמתח
על הצד.
והמלך חוזר ומניף,
אז יורק הבית הפתוח פעמיים
שני לאופרדים בבת אחת,
הם צללים עם רצון לחימה נועז
על הנמר;
הוא תופס אותם עם כפות רגליו העזות
והאריה בשאגה
קם - הכול נהיה שקט,
ומסביב במעגל,
רותחים וממוכרי רצח,
מחנות חתולים המחרידים.
אז נופלת מקצה המרפסת
כפפה מיד יפה
בין הנמר והאריות
ישר באמצה.
ולאביר דלורג' בנעימה מלגלגת
פונה העלמה קוניגונד:
'אדוני האביר,אם אהבתך כה לוהטת
כפי שנשבע בכל שעה,
אה, אזי תרים לי הכפפה. "
והאביר בריצה מהירה
יורד אל הכלוב הנורא
עם צעד תקיף
ומהאמצע המפלצתי
לוקח את הכפפה עם אצבע נועזת.
ועם הפתעה ואימה
רואים זאת האבירים והנשים האצילות,
וברוגע מחזיר הוא הכפפה.
אז מכל פה מהדהד השבח,
אך עם מבט אוהב מלטף -
ומבטיח לו את אושרו מתקרב -
מקבל אותו העלמה קוניגונדה.
והוא זורק את הכפפה לה בפרצוף:
"תודתך, גברתי, אני לא מבקש,"
ועוזב אותה באותה שעה.

My mother Erica was always very proud that Schiller had featured prominently
in her Czernowitz education.
Hardy has only told us the first verse of this poem. Anyone wishing to read
how the tale continues, with its twist at the end – and why it is called

Why do we have so many lions in Czernowitz ?
White lions, musical lions, toothless lions .
How did it start ?
It started with Schiller who wrote poems .
And his poems spoke of old Greece of dragons
And other vermin,
He wrote one named Der Handschuh (the Glove)
About arrogance and bravery :here goes-
The Glove ( 1797)
"Before his lion-court
Impatient for the sport,
King Francis sat one day;
The peers of his realm sat around,
And in balcony high from the ground
Sat the ladies in beauteous array.
And when with his finger he beckoned,
The gate opened wide in a second
And in, with deliberate tread,
Enters a lion dread,
And looks around
Yet utters no sound;
Then long he yawns
And shakes his mane,
And, stretching each limb,
Down lies he again.
This is how the lion became most famous in Czernowitz.
Many houses had lions .
So many lions would confuse anybody.
The real most popular animal in Czernowitz was
the cockroach but you don't sculpture cockroaches .
(Here we call them Juk.)
