When my maternal grandfather emigrated here to the US in 1913 from Chernowitz, he was 16 years old.
In his naturalization papers he filled out 10 years later I found he had two last names. He was Louis Herbst vel Finger. As part of his declaration he dropped the name Finger and for the rest of his life was known as Louis Herbst.
Why would he have two surnames? Was that a tradition among Bukovina Jews? Was Finger his Mom's or Dad's surname?
Thanks.
Lloyd
