Dear Hardy,
I have been looking a lot at this so interesting picture, but having had a good look at the maps as well, in particular the old Pharus Plan of around 1900, I cannot accept the statement of the publisher, also because I have lived several years (1942-4) in the Ham which, if I remember correctly, is the Springbrunnenplatz.
The more logical - from the pure optical directions point of view - explanation is that the picture was taken in the Schilgass Northward, at the intersection with the Reitschulgasse, into which you are looking down, and see the typical roof of the Great Synagogue slightly to the left. Please your opinion after you have done the same - that is - looked at the maps.
