Hi Lloyd! Czernowitz had the Erzherzog Eugen 41st Infanterie Regiment based
at the local barracks, and it had many Jewish soldiers and officers..and an
attached "Feldrabbiner"...a military rabbi. Under Kaiser Franz Joseph acts
of anti-Semitism in the Army were a court-martial offence. Many of the men
in my family served in "Unser Regiment"...our regiment! Cornel.

Hi
You asked if Jews from Bukowina were in the Austrian army before 1918...
Sure, they were proud to fight for their homeland Austria, for the Kaiser
Franz Josef I, who gave many rights to the Jews...Read the story about the "

Kaiser Franz Joseph und der Salzhering" von Edgar Hilsenradt...
the youngest brother of my father, David Langhaus was shut in the WW1
officer on the iIalian front, both brothers of my mother were also
officersrs in that war, , in Vatra Dornei is a memorial of all military,
from Vatra-Dornaei perished in that war, ,and there are many Jewish
names...

I asked this before but got no response.
I think its an important topic.
Did Romanian/Bukovinian Jews serve in the military of Austria before 1918 or
Romania from 1918-1945?
Were they permitted or did they attempt to avoid military service as I've
read here.
And why was that?
I'm not making any judgments, just inquiring.
