A small story. As already told, among the Jewish people in Bukowina at the
time of WW1 was a deep-rooted fear from the Russians (especially the
Kozaks). When the Russian forces advanced in 1916 and approached Czernowitz
many Jews fled westwards causing an episode in the history of the Bukowinian
Jews known as "Die Flucht" - the Flight. One of the families among them was
the family of my paternal grandfather. The family of my maternal grandfather
lived in Suczawa. When the Jewish community in that region saw the the
danger of the approaching Russians they turned to the Austrian army
authorities and asked to be recruited in a special unit which volunteered to
stay when the dwindling Austrian forces retreated. Here are my grandfather
Israel-Isidor Ruhm, and his son Shmuel-Sammi proud in their uniform.

Patriotism and love of the old emperor Franz Joseph
were
powerful incentives for Jews to join the Austrian forces. My father ended
up in the Telegraph Regiment in St. Pölten outside Vienna.
