Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Army service

My father was recruited in Vienna in summer 1915 (where a part of the family
was in refuge from the Russian occupation), as "einj=C3=A4hrig Freiwilliger"
having just finished his maturated from school. He was proud of serving with
a Kaiserj=C3=A4ger Regiment and had 27 front months against= both the
Italian and Russian army until WWI ended.

He was during most of the time a F=C3=A4hnrich (equivalent to the English
sergeant) and on the way to become a lieutenant. The war did not go on
forever and after the war the Romanian army having occupied Bucovina and
being aware of the quality of their enemy soldiers, integrated and stepped
them up in their own but only as reservists, and all F=C3=A4hnrichs as
lieutenants.
In spring 1941 he was called for reserve duty but had the luck to finish the
2 months service in the end of May. So he came back in time for the exchange
of North Bucovina.

He never complained about antisemitism in the Austrian army. That of course
does not mean that there was none. The Regiment he served might have had
very few Jews, or that a certain amount of antisemitism was considered
"fair" everywhere and by everybody around, at that time.
