Saddened to learn today of the passing of one of the greats, Theodore
Bikel. Reading about this in the Forward, I found out that he was a
Bukovinian Jew.

His autobiography (from google-books) shows that his father was Josef
“BICKEL” from Czernowitz (or “Sergie”?) and his mother’s family were
RIEGLERs from Unter Stanestie.
More than 35 years ago, as a student in Wisconsin, I remember vividly how
he lingered after a performance just to chat with us students. He seemed
to have all the time in the world to connect with us. I never expected
this from such an accomplished artist.
