I would like to add a funny story. When I arrived in Israel in 1944 under
British mandate we were taken to the refugee camp in Atlit. We had no
papers and, like Fred, were stateless. Before being released we had to
become British citizens of Palestine, we had to give our place and date of
birth. My English was nil and I had to spell my name which was Fleischer,
that was quite an ordeal as I couldn't spell English, so after a while I
managed and after it was done he asked me "so many letters, how do you read
it?, then came place of birth, well Czernowitz - he looked at me and said
"where is that?" I said Bukovina, that was a relief and he wrote Vienna
-simple, isn't it?? when? 28.5.26, that was simple too he wrote 28.6.26
-easier-? I admit at that time I was too anxious to get out and didn't
look at what he wrote and so, from then on I have a new identity and when
I have to fill out forms, till today, I have to think twice before I know
that it's me!!!
