All the following spellings are used:
Czernowitz (deutsch auch Tschernowitz; ukrainisch Чернівці/Tscherniwzi; russisch Черновцы/Tschernowzy, rumänisch Cernăuți, polnisch Czerniowce, jiddisch טשערנאָװיץ Tschernowitz, hebräisch צֶ׳רנוֹבִיץ Tschernowitz) in der westlichen Ukraine

Can anybody explain the importance of spelling the city name correctly?
I've seen various spellings here.
Is it Czernowitz?
Chernowitz? or
Chernivtsi, all of the above or something else?
And why the variations?
