I posted a small collaboration between Hardy and myself on facebook - I
asked his permission to use his poetic text before I embarked on this trip
with Christian Herrmann, on what I referred to as "the heart of darkness" -
Tulcin, Carriera de Piatra, the Dniester - stories by my mother of riding
in cattle cars, of toiling in stone quarry, of having to break through the
ice in the winter in order to wash my diapers, of knowing from early on
never to cry because it was dangerous to attract attention, that translated
to my recurrent nightmares as I was growing up. I was hoping to be able to
take pictures of what I imagined as a forbidding terrain but what I found
is a poor part of town where people labor at their daily task and know
little about what happened here some seventy years ago - chickens peck in
the dirt and children play on a stoop. The sun was too bright, the sky too
blue and I wished for some clouds or darkness to be able to evoke the
darkness of the past. Therefore I was grateful when a storm blew up when we
were riding the marschroute from CZ to Lviv that allowed me to capture some
of the poetry and ominousness of this river.

I set the privacy on the above facebook post as "global" so that anyone who
wants to can see it.

best
Sylvia
