Thanks very much for all of your answers.
My father's uncle, who died in 1942 and is buried there, had such a
stone, which is what made me ask. I was srtuck by the fact that anyone
who died during the war got a formal burial and a stone at all.
My speculation was thus along the lines of what Bruce and Irene suggest.
Are we right? Other ideas?
