In prewar Cernauti it was illegal to belong to the Communist party.
The punishment for disobeying this law were very severe.
Many people, like my father were not party members, but secretly helped hide
and spread Communist leaflets and flyers.
Considering the poverty of the lower classes in Romania, this should not
astonish anyone.
