This message just rang the bell in my mind with regard to the highly hilarious aria of Zjupan, the swine grower in the Zigeunerbaron operette:
Ja, das Schreiben und das Lesen
Ist nie mein Fach gewesen
(Yes, writing and reading was never my profession)etc.
and ends in:
Ja, Mein idealer Lebenszweck,
Ist Borstenvieh, ist Schweinespeck.
(Yes, my ideal aim in life is swine and bacon .
My parents attended presentations of this funny and melodious operette very likely in the Scala theatre which was several houses away from ours in the Althgasse, just a few minutes walking away from the Austriaplatz.
My father sang for us (and was joined by my mother) quite a few arias of this operette -as well as of Kalman's operettas, but of course not this one, because he was "light orthodox" as we call it today, and bacon or swine was not lightly mentioned in our kosher home.
Twentyfive years later I was greatly exccited and moved when I heard and saw for the first time, at the Volksoper in Vienna, in the later sixties, the famous other melodious aria -
Hier der Csako, her den Hut,
Zieh' mit unser'n Scharen,
Dass Dein Säbel Wunder tut,
Ha, der Feind soll es erfahren
Put on the helmet, give me the hat,
come with us in our hords,
that your sabre produces wonders
the enemy will learn (,
which my father repeatedly sang to us in the Ghetto, to keep our spirits up. Suddenly my - at that time deceased - father was sitting right next to me and enjoying this aria again... Well, tricks of the mind - but at least enjoyable ones.
Since then I have taken care to have a videotape of the operette and enjoyed it myself many times. I believe that these arias that my parents used to sing to me in my and
childhood in the Ghetto have turned me into such a fan of operas
and operettas

Regards

Mordecai
