Gloves and Herrngasse remind me of my grandmother and of my father:
As I have mentioned long time ago, my grandmother had a hat shop on
Herrngasse. My father went to Viena to become an architect but his mother
insisted that he also get skilled in a trade. So, while in Viena for his
architecture studies, my father learned to make gloves. He went to a course
given by a lady, took extensive notes with sketches and explanations,
finished the course and forgot about the whole thing.
During the war he was no longer allowed to work as an architect and had a
very serious income problem. He was in Bucharest at the time, and so was his
mother who had come to Bucharest to open shop there. So he dug out his
course notes, relearned the trade and started to make gloves. His mother
would make hats for the various "doamna general" and "doamna colonel" and he
would make gloves. He became quite good at making gloves. Years later he
would tell me that the sturdiest leather for gloves is deer leather which
lasts forever.
