After nearly a year of searching with no luck at all, some distant
relative of mine found me on ancestry.com and contacted me.
She had lots of information on my mother's side of the family which I
knew very little about.
There are still many unanswered questions that maybe some people here
can answer now that I have some clues and names to go on.Most of the
people listed here as well as my grandparents were born in the late
1800's and emigrated to the US by 1920.
The names here from Czernowitz and the surrounding areas are on my
mother's/great grandmother's side: Her father Louis Finger/Herbst,
and/or Frischling Frischling. Abraham Finger (the one who might be
Chana Malke's father (Chana was my mother's grandmother) or brother or
cousin...) was some type of government worker in Czernowitz, as well
as religious figure which I think was called a 'Betel' which cousin
Louis Finger said was sort of like a Rabbi but not quite. I do know
that in the U.S., Abraham was considered enough of a Rabbi to
officiate at his daughter's and granddaughter's weddings. Abraham and
his family lived in Czernowitz, in the city, before he emigrated. Some
of the Finger cousins lived in Sadagora and used to come into the city
with fresh vegetables occasionally. Abraham Finger had a brother,
Zacharia, who was a tailor in Czernowitz. There was also a
half-brother in Novoselitz (we think.) I don't know how Chane Malke
ended up in Zastawna and don't know very much about that town. Also,
while Abraham's son, Chaim Leib, was a member of one of the
Czernowitzer societies here in the U.S. - Abraham himself was a
member of the Independent Old Men's Minsker Association. We believe
that his mother might have been from Russia but cannot document this
yet. His membership in a Minsker Society seems to support this.
Abraham's Ellis Island record says he was born in Calagora which I
thought might have been Gologory but other documentation I looked at
more recently says he was born in Czernowitz.
This is what a woman sent me a few days ago and I would like to see if
someone recognizes these names and places.
Thanks, Lloyd
