That's an interesting photo.
The Czernowitz town databases for 1909 and other years show quite a number
of people with the name Goldenberg. It would be interesting to know more
about the family relations between them.
I am particularly interested in one called Chaim Leib (or Leon) Goldenberg,
born 23 September 1869. He died in Israel on 6 January 1948. Was he
possibly a brother of your grandfather?
Leon married a great aunt of mine Perl (or Pepie) Siederer in the early
1890s. I do not know exactly when they left Czernowitz or how they came to
be in Israel. They had two daughters Bertha, later Bertha Bleier
(1896-1984) and Ernestine (later Tina Pinkas) (1897-1993). Both daughters
were born in Czernowitz and died in Israel. Bertha had a son Erich last
known to be living in Holon Israel, who I have tried to contact but without
success. Bertha, Tina, and Erich fled to London in WW2, where they stayed
with my grandparents, my grandfather Moritz (later John) being a younger
brother of Pepie. Maybe they left direct from Czernowitz, but possibly they
lived in Vienna for a while. Bertha's husband, Fritz Bleier died at the
hands of the Nazis.
A relative in New Jersey has recently turned up an old photo of Pepie and
Leon and other family members. She has promised to scan this and send it to
me. When she does, I will post it on the Ehpes site, and maybe we will see
a Goldenberg family resemblance. If anyone knows more about the Goldenberg,
Bleier or Pinkas families, particularly in Israel, please let me know.
