At our home in Cura=C3=A7ao, as most East European Jews there did, we ate
mamalige (polenta) with "shmetene". The manalige was a local staple known
as "funchi," which natives ate with yambo (okra). Unlike the soupy mamalige
I was served in Ukraine, ours was thick and firm. Our shmetene was
Breakstone's imported from the U.S. and also put in cold beet borscht.
