I posted this a few months ago and didn't receive any responses, but I
haven't given up hope.
There are hundreds of Merksamers in the US and in Israel today, one of
them must be related to me and in this group.
My father's family (except my Russian grandmother) all claimed to be
from Chernowitz, but I have not found one shred of evidence other than
their US documents, that they even existed.
These are their names - all from 1880-1914
Samuel Merksamer - emigrated to NY in 1897 and his brother
Jacob Merksamer - emigrated to New York in 1887
Their parents Berend or Bernhard Merksamer and his wife Nettie.
born in Bukovina in the 1840's
Berend died in 1914 in Czernowitz. No records for Nettie.
Her father Markus Letzer and his wife Rosa (Weisman) her sisters
Anna (Mestel) all lived in the Czernowitz area.
Dora Gronich and her husband Moritz - emigrated with Samuel in 1897.
Has anyone heard of these names in Chernowitz, Suceava or in Storojhnyets?
I am sure they left family in Czernowitz with the Merksamer name after
they died by 1920.
Thanks for keeping an eye out for me and letting me know if you find
someone out there.
