Dear Loyd

As in Israeli since 1/1/1948 I believe I am in a position to respond to =
your argument=2E =

I was in Czernowitz from 1933 to 1945=2E Just - as Hardy has pointed out=
 - until 1939 we Czernowitzer Jews were a peaceful people involved in ma=
king a living - a poor one=2C or a rich one=2C or a middle class one=2C =
combined with enjoying as much culture as we could=2C and trying to have=
 a good neighbourship with our non-Jewish Czernowitzers =2E =

Those of us=2C and there were not too many=2C who had the foresight and =
the understanding that our safety lies not there=2C but in a country of =
our own=2C and had the opportunity (fiscal means and a good profession=2C=
as required by the British Mandate Authorities) left for Palestine =2E =

Those who would not leave the imaginary =22paradise=22=2C or could not=2C=
or missed the opportunity (the White Book in 1939) found that hell brok=
e loose on us in three stages - in 1940 when the Soviets occupied Cz=2C =
in 1941 when the Romanians and Germans came in=2C and again in 1944=2C w=
hen the Soviets liberated us=2E =

Just consider the marching in of armed troops on all 3 occasions=2E I do=
not know if you have ever lived in an occupied country=2E It takes year=
s until you are resourceful enough to have gathered sufficient cooperati=
on with some underground movement=2C in order to collect arms and offer =
resistance=2E And=2C in each case we know of today=2C it took a lot of t=
ime under Nazi rule to have reliable contacts with the local underground=
(Warsaw and other Ghettos) if there was such=2E =

There was no such movement in Czernowitz in neither of the 3 periods men=
tioned (in the last period there was an underground of gangs of =22bande=
rovtsi=22 who were fascists and attacked not only Russians but preferabl=
y Jews)=2C so there was no possibility to obtain any arms=2E And=2C as f=
or the Soviet periods there was no opportunity to have understandings wi=
th the local neighbours=2C because nobody could be trusted not to be an =
informer=2E Are you aware that we children and youngsters were taught at=
kindergarten or school to inform on our parents=3F And at the least inn=
ocent information passed on to the interrogating teachers or tutors=2C w=
ithin a day or two=2C the family or the father were arrested at night an=
d exiled to Siberia=3F =

Yes =2C in that last period surviving Czernowitz Jews of ages 18-40 =22h=
ad the opportunity=22 (were drafted at peril of being shot as potential =
deserters) to take up arms as soldiers of the Red Army =2Cand take reven=
ge on the Germans=2E=2E Some did=2C like my uncle=2C who fought in the 3=
rd BeloRussian Shock Army and fell at the foot of the Reichstag on the 3=
0th April 1945)=2C and it took us nearly 70 yeras to locate his grave in=
 Berlin=2E

Can you grasp the notion that every night=2C during the two periods of 1=
940-1 and 1944-5 our parents and sometimes we too=2C were sleeping half-=
awake=2C listening to the noises of the night in the gangway of the hous=
e=2C and were not once awakened at 2 or 3 or 4 o=27clock by a knocking a=
t one of the doors=2C terrified - but happy that it was not ours=2C and =
finding out the next morning that somebody had disappeared=2E Bear in mi=
nd that it was usually the father of a family who was arrested by a numb=
er of armed policemen=2C and he would do everything demanded of him=2C i=
n order to prevent any harm to his loved ones - wife=2C or parents=2C or=
children=2E Yes=2C there was alot to loose=2C and every father wished t=
o protect his beloved=2C and hoped he would come back some day (and some=
 did)=2E

And that was =22paradise=22 indeed=2C compared to the midperiod of the n=
azi-fascist rule=2C when our =22dear=22 neighbours stood laughing and gl=
oating as Jews were gathered by armed personnel and evicted from their f=
lats to the Gheto or the trains - waiting just the necessary minutes unt=
il they could bust into the flats and either occupy them=2C or just rob =
everything movable (have you ever seen the film Zorba the Greek=3F and t=
he villagers who robbed the flat of his Bouiboulina were not antisemites=
=3F)=2E Do no forget also that the authorities during that horrible peri=
od used deception=2C advising that we are going to be just relocated to =
areas were we would be working for food and lodging and clothing=2E=2E=2E=

Yes=2C today we here are =22heroes=22 and =22matchos=22 here=2C because =
we are in our own country=2C and have an army composed of ourselves and =
of our sons and daugthers=2C and our granchildren=2C and can rely on eac=
h other - back to back - even if we have quite bitterly opposing views a=
s to how to run the country tp paradies or to hell=2E Yes=2C we have lea=
rned how to defend ourselves=2C at great costs=2C whether defensively or=
offensively=2C but that is only thanks to our being here=2C together=2E=
 =

And even today=2C notwithstanding what they see here=2C how do our breth=
ren in Europe act=3F How many of our brethren=2C in France=2C just for i=
nstance=2C are walking armed in the streets=2C and how many are just hid=
ing the Yarmoulke=2C so as not to be harmed=3F=2E=2E=2E And mind you=2C =
they are not attacked by armed policemen or soldiers (those protect them=
) - just by antisemitic hooligans=2E=2E=2E

No=2C we should not and dare not accuse our brethren in occupied Europe =
in general or Czernowits in particular=2C in the dark age of Soviet or N=
azi domination for not fighting against the nearly absolute powers of th=
e dictatorships=2E We can only pity those who perished as a result=2C an=
d just dream pf how different their fate could have been had they left o=
r been able to leave for Palestine before 1939=2E

Kind regards

Mordecai=2E
