Dear Czernowitz List Members
I don't post here very often, but I read what everyone else posts with
great interest. I have a big ROSENBERG family history brick wall
which I am posting here in case anyone who reads this posting and can
help me. Sometimes posting here leads to amazing new discoveries
about our families.
My paternal grandfather was Marcus ROSENBERG (he was born in 1883 in
Czernowitz and died in London UK in 1969). His father was Jona Mechel
MEERFELD born on 08 Oct 1860 in Czernowitz, and died Abt. 1918 in
Czernowitz. His mother was Juette ROSENBERG born on 16 May 1862 in
Corowia nr Czernowitz and died on 21 Jul 1937 in Czernowitz. I have
my grandfather's birth certificate and those of his 7 brothers and
sisters. I have no official documents about my Great Grandparents,
but my Grandfather documented his family history in his Lebensbrief
that he carried with him through several concentration camps and
subsequently,and which I have carefully conserved and copied.
Three of my Grandfather's 4 grandparents (my Great Great Grandparents)
were born with the last name ROSENBERG in the Czernowitz area, and I
have made extensive use of the Mormon filmed records in the family
history library at Salt Lake City, many of which were indexed by the
group led by Daniel Horowitz - see

traced 4 of my 8 Czernowitz G G Great Grandparents but after this I
get stuck. I have names, but no dates or places, except Czernowitz.
I have looked in the Czernowitz burials on the JewishGen JOWBR web
page, where there are 65 burials for people called ROSENBERG but none
of the ROSENBERGs in there are in my family tree. Where else should I
look? I know the family lived (and died) in the city - they were
living on Kalizanka Street and lived in various different houses there
- as shown on the birth certificates. Were there any other cemeteries
where the family would have been buried?
What other places can I look for other records for my family? Some of
the other information I have says they may also have lived in Molodiya
and Koroviya which are both to the South East of the city. Does
anyone know of any records for these places, or are they within the
Czernowitz ones? Both locations are about 20km south of the city.
The only other location noted is Nepolowitz or Nepolokivtsi which is
about 28 KM to the NW of the city.
The ROSENBERG family has a only a very few other associated lastnames
- MEERFELD or MERFELD or MEHRFELD, TRESSER and more distantly, KATZ,
UNGAR and PAUKER, but mainly they were ROSENBERG marrying ROSENBERG,
or members of the MEERFELD (and varieties) family.
Does anyone reading this have any new ideas for what other research I
can do to make progress with finding out more about my family? I have
already found the numerous (almost 50) names on pages of testimony
that my Great Aunt (Grandfather's sister) completed for the family,
and I have used them to re-constitute the family, as far as I am able
to do so, but they all eventually lead back to people called ROSENBERG
in Czernowitz!
All thoughts and ideas would be very much appreciated
