Sorry, Hardy, I can not support this statement. At home, both in Czernowitz
at the time I can recall (1939-45) talks within the family, neighbours or
friends. and years later in Israel, I always heard and used these umlauts.
So maybe only part of the population, who were more influenced by the
Yiddish or Romanian, lost the umlauts. Yes, we also spoke perfect Yiddish
with our elders, but this did not affect our German. I suppose dear Hedwig
can confirm this.

I can confirm that I experienced the same as Mimi in Vienna in the 3
Sabbatical years I spent there, as well as in many weeks there over some
thirty odd years at technological co-ordination meetings at the IAEA.

So there is no black and white in this aspect - possible quite a range of
grays in between.
