Dear Edgar,
The Hanukah ceremony that is shown in the second link took place several
years ago, when a Jewish politician, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, was Minister of the
Interior. That ceremony took place in the former Chilean Congress house, in
Santiago. Congress moved to the city of Valparaso some 30 years ago and
these offices are still used for ceremonies and congressional meetings,
since the executive and judicial powers remained in Santiago.
I think both reports are very interesting. I offer to translate them. But
they are long and I will take approximately two weeks in delivering the
translation.
People called this "The Second Schindler" report, because a diplomat whose
name is Jorge Schindler (not a relative of Oskar) made a thorough
investigation on the case and because of it was honored by the Jewish
Community in Chile.
Please let me know if you and the group are interested in my translation.
Google translation is still too poor to make it understandable.
Best regards,
Sally Bendersky
Chilean ambassador to Israel (2000 - 2006)

Subject: [Cz-L] Samuel del Campo's Rescue Operation in Czernowitz
Czernowitzers...
Since last year Spanish speaking websites and blogs are reporting on Samuel
del Campo's rescue operation during WW2 in Czernowitz:

Samuel del Campo, a diplomat from Chile, acted in favour of about 250 Jewish
families, who - despite of their Polish citizenship - were imprisoned by the
Romanian authorities in the Czernowitz Ghetto. There is evidence that thanks
to Samuel del Campo's intervention these families succeeded to escape from
the deportation to Transnistria.
It was the historian Dr. habil. Mariana Hausleitner, who drew my attention
to Samuel del Campo and to the Spanish speaking press coverage on his rescue
operation.
Does anyone of you know more about this?
