I find it quite an amazing coincidence Hardy that you raise this fact
exactly at this time. I see on Wikipedia that the Volga German Autonomous
Soviet Socialist Republic was disestablished in 1941. It's capital
was Engels, previously Called Pokrovsk and Kosackenstadt, directly across
the Volga from the city of Saratov. The Saratov Suffering Film Festival
(that's really its title!), which specializes in documentaries with this
theme, just this week selected A Shtetl in the Caribbean for the next
festival and will screen it with Russian subtitles. So "what goes around,
comes around". And maybe the Germans' descendants will get to not only
learn of Bukovina, Czernowitz and Cura=C3=A7ao, but also see and hear
exactly how their brutal landsmenner from Frankfurt slaughtered the Jews of
David Horodok and Mikashevichi in Belarus (former Poland), graphically
recounted in the film just as Hedwig tells of the Czernowitzer
Volksdeutsche troops in Lodz (where my maternal grandfather who brought my
mother to Curacao in 1930, was from).
