A brief story about the daughter of a known Czernowitzer, Prof. Marcus Reiner - Shlomit Ilan.
Born in Czernowitz in 1886 and receiving the Civil Engineering degree at the Technical University of Vienna, he made aliya in 1922, joined kibutz Heftsi-Ba, served as chief Civil engineer in the Mandatory Government and participated in the design of the notorious Police "fortresses" all over the country. He joined thereafter the Technion my colleagues in 1951-5 who studied Civil Engineering adored and feared him) and made his name internationally as founder of the Rheology of Materials science and as expert on Strength of Materials. Received the State of Israel annual prize for Exact Sciences in 1958. The Technion installed the Marcus Reiner Mechanics and Rheology chair in his honour.
His daughter, Shlomit, was born here in 1934.and became a teacher of English. She was stunned by the difficulties encountered by local born youngsters with mastering Engli,sh and after analysing the teaching methodology decided that the failure was in it, insofar as the accent was on teaching Grammar.
She developed her own system , termed GAME (Global Analytical Method of Teaching the Reading of English). Its basis is learning reading whole sentences and only thereafter learning then letters and their sound. The Student "photographs" the sentences and words and "stores" them in his mind. The analysis of the words is based on analysis of syllables and letters in known words. The system succeeded and was adopted in many schools up today and thousands of scientists and English Department heads in Colleges owe their mastering of English to her method. She passed away last month.
A Czernowitzer and his daughter brought us honour.

Mordecai
