That is a very interesting question. Because the answer is probably: not
many, it would be very interesting to know if we could trace any
individual families that far back.

There was apparently always some Jewish population in the region--but,
as most list members know, the Jewish population of Bukovina was at
first very small, and then grew rapidly only after the mid-19th century
from in-migration. Jews made up only about 3 percent of the population
until then.

Many of you are also familiar with Hugo Gold's History of the Jews of
Bukovina, which was written in German but has been made available in
English via the Jewishgen website.

Gold cites a population of 906 (206 families) in 1769, before the war
that preceded Austrian acquisition of the territory; 2906 (650 families)

Then we find 7726 in 1830
