Dear Eleanor,
I remember a book I read :
Le Juif Errant est arrivé (The Wandering Jew Is Home), by Albert Londres
In which he writes about the famous Jewish watchmakers from the
Judengasse in Czernowitz with people
bringing their watches for repair from miles away,

Hardy

Subject: [Cz-L] Introduction and questions

To the other members of the Czernowitz list, Thank you for accepting me to
the group. I am a researcher in Ayr, Scotland= , and I discovered that my
great grandfather Uscher TANNENBAUM was born in =
1868 in Russ Banilla (now Banyliv), a small village not far from Czernowitz=
=
. He was Jewish, the son of tenant farmers Moses TANNENBAUM and Deborah ROL=
=
L. Usher died in Berlin in 1937, but his parents are buried in Banyliv.=C=
2=
=A0
I don't know=C2=A0much about how Uscher came to be in Berlin. I do know=
 tha=
t he describes himself as 'Uhrmacher' in many of the directories I have fou=
=
nd him in. And I have read that Czernowitz had a watchmaking industry. Is t=
=
his true? I=C2=A0would be very interested to find out more about=C2=
=A0the w=
atchmaking industry in Czernowitz, if anyone knows about it. I am guessing =
=
it is possible that my great grandfather learned the trade there. I believe=
=
he also made the cabinets for the clocks.=C2=A0 I have written to
the=C2=A0archives in Chernivtsi but have not had any info= rmation re=
turned
yet. Has anyone worked with them before? Unfortunately I d= o not know an=
y
Ukranian.=C2=A0 I would be particularly interested to hear from anyone
researching the fami= lies ROLL or TANNENBAUM, anyone with knowledge of t=
he
watchmaking and repai= r industry in Czernowitz, and anyone with connecti=
ons
or information on Ban= yliv/Russ Banilla.=C2=A0 Many thanks and best =
wishes
from Scotland.
