Many thanks to Edgar for posting this terrific lecture by Dr.
Geissbuehler. "Bloody July: Romania and the Holocaust in Summer 1941" is
a very comprehensive piece --- that serves to clarify exactly what
happened to our people in Bukowina and why it happened. I wish I could
have been in Israel to attend the conference.

I am hoping Geissbuehler's words will inspire people to do more research
on the smaller Bukowina centers. I believe Father Desbois' group has
done some work indentifying some unmarked mass grave sites there. There
was recently a very good "60 minutes" television segment on the
significant work his group is doing. He also confirms that many of these
mass killings were public events and that locals now in their 80's can
actually tell you where they were standing when shown pictures of the
massacres in their villages and towns.

In her book Basilic, the author Madeleine Kahn describes her return to
Stanesti de Jos --- a town whose Jewish history has been completely
erased, and how she took local officials to task on their distorted
version of history.

There are probably many more histories like this to be written - but I
would recommend Kahn's book (currently only in French) to anyone with
an interest in reading a first person account of what happened in 1941 -
through the eyes of a Parisian child visiting her grandmother, and
getting caught in the events. Her tale of survival against all odds is
very moving.
