Dear Hardy,
I invite you to take a look at Samuel del Canto's story from a different
point of view than the one I think you are taking now:
This man was a young diplomat who risked his life and lost his career in
order to do what his consciousness dictated to him. Chile, or at least the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave explicit instructions to prevent the
"MEMBERS OF THAT RACE" (as written in official documents of the time) from
receiving documentation that would allow them to emigrate to Chile. This
reminds me of Gregory Wallance's book "America's Soul in the Balance". You
might remember that "our" Ruth Glasberg provided important information for
that book. The US Ministry of Foreign Affairs had powerful enough members
who prevented the evacuation of Transnistria survivors to let them emigrate
to USA.
Jorge Schindler is a young diplomat who is researching the issue because he
thinks it is fair to uncover an unknown situation and to recover and honor
the public identity of a man who disobeyed racist orders and was accussed of
taking money illegally and was fired from his job. Jorge thinks he saved
several hundreds or maybe some thousand Jewish lives. His motivation is
justice in general and acknowledgement by the Jewish community . This is why
he is looking for people who might have been saved through del Canto and
that would entitle him to be recognized by Yad Vashem as a "Fair man"
According to information gathered by Jorge Schindler, it was the mayor
Traian Popovici who ordered to stamp "under Chilean Protection" on the homes
of many of those Jews who had been sent to the Czernowiz guetto and were
thus saved. It is obvious, then, that the mayor and the Chilean charg
d'affaires were working in agreement.
I think our group is a relevant source of information for Jorge. This is why
I contacted him when I read Edgar Hauser's mail on the topic.
I am copying to Jorge in order for him to check that the information I just
gave you is correct.
All the best,
Sally Bendersky

Hi Hardy and to all members of the list, who are involved in the research
about Samuel del Campo.
Samuel del Campo was not the only diplomat, who helped with visas to their
country, so Wallenberg, so another South/American diplomat in Lettland or
Litauen, I do not remember the name...but I, an old women, near to 100, I
believe that in this case may be, after the name, a link to Jews, ,may be
his ancestors were Marerans, from Spain...
Thanks to all researchers
Hedwig
