Dear list members -
I am pleased to be able to share the following news.
The first American screening of "A Shtetl in the Caribbean", and a Q&A
with the award-winning director Sherman De Jesus, will take place in
NYC on Tuesday evening, February 16, 2016. The film, subtitled "A Way
of Arriving", tells the gripping story of how my childhood friend
Tsale and I, children of Jewish refugees who grew up on the island of
Curaçao, our parents having fled there before and after WWII, travel
together to the birthplaces of our parents in Ukraine and Belarus in
search of their history. In the film surviving refugees also give
their first-hand account of how they happened to settle on the exotic
island.
A Shtetl in the Caribbean was filmed in Curaçao, the US, Belarus,
Ukraine and Israël. Of special interest to list members are scenes of
Czernowitz, Wiznitz and my father's town of Waschkoutz (Vashkivtsi),
including glimpses of the cemeteries, the Baal Shem Tov's mikveh, the
abandoned home of the Wiznitzer Rebbes, and archival clips of old
Czernowitz. While several languages are spoken, including Dutch,
English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian and the island dialect of
Papiamentu, subtitles are in English. The haunting original score by
Jazz pianist/composer Randal Corsen was performed with the Matangi
String Quartet. A Shtetl in the Caribbean was selected by festivals
in Italy, Russia and Curaçao, and won the 2015 prize for Best Feature
Documentary at the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival in New Delhi.
Director Sherman De Jesus: “In an era when thousands of refugees at
the same time cross the borders of their war-torn countries, it is
worth appreciating that there have always been refugees, people who
try to escape the violence of war, persecution and other catastrophes.
A Shtetl in the Caribbean is a homage to Curaçao, the small island
with a large heart where so many found a safe haven.”
