Dear List Members,

Following input received from list members and many others, Mr. Zissels,
co-president of the Vaad of Ukraine, wrote back a lengthy explanation with
further background on the project to restore the Memorial building at the
entrance to the cemetery. There are a number of important points made in
his letter, including reference to the main use of the large central room
in the past as a ceremonial hall, with the Leichenhalle/morgue occupying
only a room to the side. The intention now is to create a memorial to
holocaust victims within the space of the ceremonial hall. Fences can be
moved if necessary; Rabbi Menachem Mendel (Chief Rabbi of Bukovina)
approves of plans; additional Vaad funds are being allocated for cemetery
upkeep/renovations; and tour companies as well as educational institutions
within Bukovina will be urged to visit the new memorial center and
cemetery.

Of course it’s not up to me to paraphrase the entire four-page letter from
Mr. Zissels. So Edgar Hauster has posted the letter on the blog:

http://ehpes.com/blog1/2016/01/16/beit-kadishin-czernowitz-cemetery/

He has embellished this post with numerous images of the building, each
one clickable to see an enlarged version. Each page of the letter is also
clickable so you can view an enlarged version.

This letter was sent to me and several other list members, as well as
representatives from Yad Vashem, the Austrian Consulate, a professor of
Jewish History in Israel, and about 20 others.

>From my point of view, this level of outreach is greatly appreciated, and
the project outlined is more solid than I had thought. Other attempts to
restore this building have failed; this one gives hope, and further
enhances the possibility that the cemetery will become the focus of
further restoration/maintenance efforts this year, and for a long time
into the future.

Several of you have offered to help form an advisory committee. I’m not
sure if one is being formed; that’s not clear from Mr. Zissels letter. At
this point, he seems to be working with several organizations and
architects, in addition to the World Organization of Bukovina Jews. I’ll
be glad to once again compile responses to forward to Mr. Zissels as I did
a couple of weeks ago.

Warmest wishes,

Bruce
