Shelley,
Firstly, I would suggest that you quote your source, which obviously is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Schmidt
Secondly, Hardy is correct (although I understand that Hardy is a man of
many talents, including being "a chicano mariachi singer"). Schmidt was born
in Davideny Village in 1904, which at that time was part of the
Austro-Hungarian empire and which did not become part of Rumania until 1918
after Austro-Hungary dissolved on 11/3/1918 just before the conclusion of
World War I on 11/18/1918. Thus the article provided by Mr. Hauster is
partially incorrect in calling Joseph Scmidt as a Rumanian singer
exclusively. Although he gained notoriety as a Rumanian singer in the 1920's
and 1930's, it was due to the fact that the Austro-Hungarian empire no
longer existed and so he was associated with Rumania.

Start shaking your maracas, muchacho.
Joseph Schmidt (March 4, 1904 – November 16, 1942) was an
Austro-Hungarian and Romanian[1][2][3] Jewish tenor and actor. He was
born in Davideny (Ukrainian: Davydivka) village in the Storozhynets
district of the Bukovina province of Austria-Hungary, which became
part of Romania after World War I and is now part of Ukraine.
