David,

You are right, our Czernowitzerisch should be preserved,
if only in our own memories and in scholarly articles about
"The dialects of German spoken in the eastern provinces"

The first of these ditties I did not know but I remember others.
We drew two dots, horizontally close to each other, saying:
"Punkt, Punkt," then we drew a small vertical line for the nose and
a small horizontal line Underneath it for the mouth saying: "Strich, Strich=
".
we then drew a small circle around the dots and lines, and a larger circle
Immediately underneath it and said:
"Kleiner K?se, gro?e Butter und das ist die Schwiegermutter".
" Schwiegermutter" (mother in law) was an occasion for saying assorted
Nasty sayings; for instance:
"Sicher ist sicher sagt der alte Michel und h?ngt die Tote Schwiegermutter=
 auf"
(Certain is certain says old Michel and strings his dead mother in law up).

Another saying which I remember is:
" Ach wie gut ist nichts zu tun und nachher sich auszuruhn!
(How wonderful to do nothing and then rest)

Also in the same vein "Liegen auf dem Rasen und spuken in den Himmel"
(Lie on the lawn and spit into the sky).

Mimi

Halo all

It is very sad but the German dialect Czernowitzerisch will die with the
last of this generation who was born in Czernowitz and still lived
small number of years in the city.
In Czernowitz a bad boy would be called a " Spitzbub" or a "Lausbub"
although he had no lice. There were of course the songs mothers use to
sing to their offspring and from the ones I remember I think some are
typicality from Czernowitz. I would like to write a number of them down
and see if some of you remember them and give commentary.
The first one is a street song I would not dare to sing at home:

Meine Oma f?hrt Motorrad
Ohne Bremse ohne Licht
Und der Schutzmann an der Ecke
Zeit das alte Luder nicht
Hola dria dria driahola dri
Hola dria dria dria Hola dri

The second was one my mother used to sing me:

Dadilein, ging allein in die gro?e Welt hinein
Stock und Hut passt ihm gut ist er wohl Gem?t
und die Mama weint so sehr
hat schon keinen Dadi mehr
hopseisa, Dadi ist da alle Kinder tralala

and a third one (I think typical Jewisch)

Mein Papi und die Mami
die haben mir gesagt
mein Sohn wen du wirst lernen
so wirst du Advokat
und ich hab nicht lernen wollen
ich bin kein Advokat
ich bin Fiaker Kutscher
und fahr mir in die Stad

I want to write then in my memories so I would like to get some comentary.

Thank you

David
