The plaque was added during the first Soviet occupation on Serednya Shkola No. 1
which Manfred Stern had attended. As mentioned in my book "From Czernowitz to the German Order
of Merit", my mother Sidi, met Leo, Manfred's brother, in Vienna during WWI. He introduced
her to German classical literature and she fell hopelessly in love with him. Leo ended up marrying Lilly, his first wife, from a wealthy family. After a very adventurous life and being a strong Soviet sympathizer, Leo chose life in East Germany with a new family and a University career. My mother never forgot "the love of her life."
