Czernowitzers...

Willy Berler was born in Czernowitz on April 11, 1918. He spent his 25th
birthday as a prisoner of the SS Camp Fort Breendonk in Belgium and from
there, one week later, on April 19, 1943, he has been deported via the
Mechelen Transit Camp to Auschwitz-Birkenau with Transport 20. Willy
Berler's incredible Holocaust survivor story "Journey Through Darkness",
available in German, French, Spanish and Hebrew too, became our Book of the
Month, July 2016:

http://czernowitzbook.blogspot.de/2016/07/journey-through-darkness-durch-die.html

Download and read as an extract from the book the tri-lingual (EN/DE/FR)
transcription of the first book chapter "A Young Bourgeois Jew from the
East", very exemplary for many high/middle class Jewish families from
Czernowitz during the interwar period. Willy Berler missed by six weeks my
uncle Maximilian Hauster, who, after an imprisonment in Fort Breendonk for
nearly one and a half years, has been deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau with
Transport 19 as early as 14.01.1943 and perished there. On "The Destruction
of Jews and Gypsies from Belgium - Mecheln-Auschwitz 1942-1944" please read
my posting

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2013/12/mecheln-auschwitz-1942-1944-destruction.html

and learn more on the fate of 104 deportees - Index of names available! -
from Bukovina, out of whom just four, two men and two women (i. e. 3.8%)
survived, including Willy Berler!
