Hi Mimi,

Nice to hear your report about my parents' home town and, more generally, your travels in the region. As my mother wrote in her memoirs, Before Memories Fade, "Czernovitz, my hometown, was my universe, the place to be." When you wrote that it is hot in the city now, it made me want to look at my mother's memoirs again to read what she discussed about seasonal activities, including her mother's hard work preserving fruits for the winter:

"Since, at that time, you could buy in the grocery just staples, like flour, salt, sugar, rice, butter, herring, everything else had to be prepared at home and at the right time. Thus summer and the beginning of autumn were the seasons to make jams, marmalade, preserves, syrup and pickles.

The end of August, when fruits were ripe, in abundance and inexpensive, the real busy time started. All this before the fall holidays: Rosh Hashanah (New Year’s) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Povidla, plum marmalade, was prepared in a big caldron. First, for a day or two, big quantities would be bought and the peasants from the market would bring them home. Then, everybody in the family pitched in washing them, removing the pits and, next day, in the early hours of the morning Mother would start boiling it, stirring in the sugar. As the liquid would evaporate, the povidla became thicker and it became hard to stir, with that enormous, wooden spatula. By evening it would be done. It cooled off through the night and next day it was time to fill the jars or big ceramic crocks."

My parents both enjoyed swimming in the river, which my father really loved to do in summer. My mother talked more about all the socializing there. Is that still a popular thing to do in Czernowitz? I wonder if the river Prut is still clean enough for swimming . . .

All the best, as always,
Eytan

Subject: [Cz-L] Czernowitz

We have now been in Czernowitz for three days, have met Arthur,
who unfortunately dislocated his shoulder and had to leave,
the volunteers from SVIT Ukraine, Rabbi Menahem Mendel,
Yakov Schwartzman, who supervises the hired workers at the cemetery
And in a few days the volunteers fro ASF Germany will arrive.

I have been to the cemetery, but before I give you a full report,
I will go back at least one or many more times.
The sapling trees are almost completely gone and so are the bushes and vines,
But annual weeds have taken over in many areas.
I will make sure that these are cut very soon, before their seeds ripen
And provide another generation for next year.

Czernowitz is beautiful as always, full of tourists, quite hot and I love being here,

Mimi
