With Christian’s post below, it’s a very fitting time to announce the
following. The long-term project to create a searchable database of all
tombstones in the Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery has come to a conclusion.
All photographed tombstones have now been indexed and data were recently
uploaded to the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry. At last week’s
Bukovina BOF meeting, Merle Kastner announced that over 29,500 burials are
now listed in the database, which can be accessed here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/
You must be a registered member of JewishGen to access the database . . .
and membership is free. In the last data submission, over 7,000 entries
were submitted.
Many thanks go to the all project volunteers, and especially to the few
who helped with project completion* over the past two years. The project
was originated by JGS Ottawa which financed expeditions to clear the
cemetery and photograph tombstones in 2001 and 2002.
I hope this database (and associated tombstone photos) will help you find
your family, and help to memorialize those who came before us.

photograph and index these areas, too.
