Hi all,
I think I have at last - with a lot of help from Edgar's lists and
tables, located the present-day building that was Schmatnick Dry Goods
at General Zadik #4, Czernowitz in 1936.
According to the EHPES.COM street name translator the street is now
named Vatutina Street, Chernivet'ka Oblast Ukraine. And that seems to
have held true up until May 26th of this year.
When looking around at maps and creeping around Google Maps to locate
the building, I found a cached article which seems to say that
Vatutina street was renamed to Stepan Bandera street, on May 26, 2016.
Oy.
STEPHAN BANDERA
On the Google Map it reads "Stepana Bandery Street". And when I look
for Stepan Bandera he seems to be a controversial character. According
to this article:
http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/165455/why-are-jews-so-afraid-of-stepan-bandera
"while Bandera and his men were responsible for killing Jews, their
ideology wasn’t fundamentally anti-Semitic; rather, it was
pro-Ukrainian, and anti- everyone who appeared to be in the way of
that"
Here is the cached link to the article:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:PkaPwG5-9LwJ:en.molbuk.ua/chernovtsy_news/110797-u-chernivcyakh-vulycyu-vatutina-pereymenuvaly-na-vulycyu-stepana-bandery.html+&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
When I go on Google Maps to Teatral'na Square and what is spelled
"Stepana Bandery Street" I find what I think is IT:
**Stepana Bandery Street 4, Chernivitsi, Chernivets'ka oblast, Ukraine**

Does anyone else think this is it?
Thanks/Best,
