Len...

First of all welcome to the List! Oy, oy, the Vapniarka Camp in Transnistria, terra incognita for so many historians, for the administration and the inhabitants of today's Vapniarka and for young age students! This issue is long overdue and deserves your commitment. Congratulations on your choice of subject!

Our "Book of the Month, June 2015: Death to the War Criminals" is rather a press review than a book. It covers the series of articles (47) released by the Romanian daily newspaper "Scanteia" between 10.05.1945 (!) - 03.06.1945

http://czernowitzbook.blogspot.de/2015/06/moarte-criminalilor-de-razboi-death-to.html

on the "The First Trial Against the War Criminals held by the Bucharest People's Tribunal"; the most informative articles are highlighted. The act of indicting against the camp commanders Ion Murgescu and Sever Buradescu as well as against the collaborator Benjamin Finkelstein were fundamental for the trial.

It is significant that all three Wikipedia articles on the Vapniarka Concentration Camp in English, French and Italian, BUT NOT in Romanian, Russian or Ukrainian (sic) are dated from middle of 2016. When I visited Vapniarka - by motorcycle - in June 2015

https://1drv.ms/f/s!Avyq9eDLfphowAPVOgFKMUCYQ7q8

apparently nobody knew anything about the Vapniarka Camp, not the Secretary General of the Vapnyarka Town Hall, nor the local grammar school teacher for history?!

Time for you, dear Len, to bring light into the deep darkness! Hope the data above (see the Vapniarka cartoon on page 8/38) will be helpful to you. We are looking very much forward to learning more on the results of your research.

Warmest wishes!

Edgar Hauster

Hi everybody,

May I introduce myself; my name is Len Mahemoff and I=
am a 76 year old mature age student (very mature age), living in Sydney Au=
stralia, who has just commenced a Post Graduate Research Master of Philosop=
hy Degree at Sydney University. My topic will be a very comprehensive =
examination of the Vapniarka Camp in Transnistria and the history, both pol=
itical and social, of that period. I am aware of 5 audio-visual testim=
onies of survivors which were made some years ago and which are available t=
o me, but I am very keen to link up with anyone who could correspond with m=
e on the subject. I realise that there are probably no longer any surv=
ivors of Vapniarka alive, but if there are descendants of those who were im=
prisoned there, it would be a privilege to be able to make contact with the=
m. Later in my studies, I intend to make a trip to Europe, and I would=
hope then to make personal contact with anyone who hopefully takes the tro=
uble to write to me. So, this is an invitation to contact me if you fe=
el you could share any information or, I dare to hope, if you are a survivo=
r or descendant of a survivor. I look forward to hearing from you.

With my best wishes for a healthy, peaceful and successful New Year,
Len Mahemoff
