We flew to Lviv and drove south via remote and old family
towns of Vivsya, Laskowice, Mateushivka, overnighted in Buchach, to
Kamniets-P and across to Czernowitz. The weather further south became sunny
and warm and the vast flat black soiled steppes turned to undulating green
vineyards and orchards as we approached Czernowitz. We had a quick lunch
and headed for the cemetery. Mimi I must let you know how it's looking. It
is completely clear around the mortuary and on all the main and side paths
on the mortuary side. I have taken lots of photos which I will send you. I
also managed to find many family plots thanks to you all. In town I found
two family homes thanks to Berti Glaubach who was a huge help to me some
years ago. I managed to step inside and nose around the ancient lobby
areas, stairwells which will not have changed at all, I'm sure not even a
lick of paint has been added since 1890/1900?
Czernowitz was celebrating 'The Day of Chernivtsi' for the founding of the
city in 1408. This is always the first Saturday in October. The squares as
well as the Turkish well areas were filled with people, the mayor was on
the balcony, concerts, brass bands, dancing in every corner, the food
stalls were unlike anything I've seen, children being helped by parents
creating massive artworks, fashion parades. This lively happy jubilant town
we witnessed was a complete contrast to what we expected.
The Allure Hotel very good and location superb. The best part for me was
simply walking the streets my ancestors walked, and I so hope I can return.
