Hi Dale,

Yes, you are completely right. In parallel I consulted the Romanian DEX online dictionary

https://dexonline.ro/definitie/Palmas

which reads for as follows: palmas / palmasa, poor farmer, without livestock or agricultural inventory, who earns his livelihood by performing manual labor for third parties.

Nice, isn't it?

I found the answer to my own question on JewishGen.org in the Info Files, where there is a list of Romanian occupations. Palmas is a handicraftsman.

Here's a question for those who know Romanian. In Czernowitz vital records from the Romanian period, I have come across the profession name "palmas" (masculine) and "palmasa" (feminine). What was this work? Thanks and Happy New Year to all.
