Yes, you are completely right. In parallel I consulted the Romanian DEX online dictionary

which reads for as follows: palmas / palmasa, poor farmer, without livestock or agricultural inventory, who earns his livelihood by performing manual labor for third parties.

I found the answer to my own question on JewishGen.org in the Info Files, where there is a list of Romanian occupations. Palmas is a handicraftsman.
