...stated I. L. Peretz on the occasion of the Yiddish Language Conference in Czernowitz (quotation see below). Don't miss this!

It was our fellow member and friend Jim Wald, who drew my attention to a magnificent cartoon on this event. Jim wrote to me: "I cannot fail to mention that the Yiddish Book Center, which conducted the interview, is on the campus where I work: Hampshire College in Amherst MA. And there is also a large modern cartoon rendering of the famous Czernowitz writers' conference as a wall display." From the mural artwork in Amherst straight to our Ehpes Blog:

Now let's listen to I. L. Peretz (1852-1915): "We don't want to be anyone's handmaiden. A lackey people cannot create cultural riches - and we do! And the best place for our gathering was here in Bukovina, especially its capital, Czernowitz. Here where people of various nationalities, speaking many languages, live side by side, it is easier to do our work in our language. We stroll in the eveneing in the streets and from various windows stream out the sounds of different languages, all kinds of folk-music. We want our own windows! Our own distinct motif in the folk-symphony."

That's superb, dear Jim, thank you for drawing our attention to this publication!
